What is OSHA Outreach Training?

OSHABuildingSiteThe OSHA Outreach Training Programs teach workers, supervisors, managers, and owners about worker rights and employer responsibilities under OSHA. In addition, this training focuses on how to identify, abate, avoid and prevent safety and health hazards found in the work environment.

The General Industry programs are designed for workers in manufacturing and service industries such as manufacturing of every kind of product, foundries, metal fab shops, warehousing, healthcare facilities, service operations like auto servicing, and other general industry settings.

The Construction programs are obviously designed for workers on construction and/or demolition sites and activities. The 10 hour courses are basic courses for all workers, especially those new to the workforce. The 30 hour courses are geared for foremen, supervisors, safety committee members, managers, S&H staff and professionals, others with responsibility for workplace safety, and owners. The 30 hour courses add components about safety and health programs, costs, management and more detailed understanding of OSHA standards.

Both levels include tests of worker knowledge and the 30 hour classes include workshops to develop skills to identify and control hazards to workers. Only instructors authorized by federal OSHA classes are eligible to conduct these Outreach Training courses. The maximum teaching time per day is 7.5 hours. A 10 hour course takes 2 days and a 30 hour course takes 4 days. Course schedules are allowed to take up to 6 months to complete.

Why Should I consider investing in the OSHA 10 or 30 Hour Outreach Training?

The OSHA Outreach Training Program is voluntary. It is not designed to meet the training requirements in specific OSHA Standards. However, some states and local jurisdictions have enacted laws mandating the OSHA 10 and 30 hour courses. Some employers, unions, and various organizations also require workers to have this training in order to work on jobsites and to fulfill their own safety training goals. When working within the City of Philadelphia for example, “The Phildelphia Building Construction and Occupancy Code,” Section A-1001.4 was amended in 2014 to required all workers and contractors working within city limits to demonstrate adequate safety training – and specifically lists the OSHA 10 and 30 Hour courses as meeting this requirement. Finally, injuries and illnesses reduce business profits annually, and attention to safety and health principles taught in the OSHA Outreach Training Programs pay a handsome return on investment! SAFETY PAYS!
