In the United States, heart disease has been the leading cause of death for over the past few decades. Even worse, many individuals who suffer from heart disease don’t have a clue that there’s something wrong until it’s too late! That’s why we want to cover the importance of learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which can dramatically increase the chances of saving the life of a family member, a friend, or even a stranger.

The first thing to know is that anyone can learn CPR. Male or female, young or old, anyone is able to learn this life saving skill! That makes it even more prominent to learn as most heart attacks don’t happen in public, they happen in the comfort of an individual’s home. Without CPR training, it can make the situation even worse if someone was to suffer a heart attack in your own home. Every minute during a heart attack counts, and the chance of survival decreases with every second spared. The average EMS response time is seven minutes, performing CPR can be immediate!

For the victim, each second decreases oxygen to the brain and reduces the flow of blood throughout the body, especially the coronary arteries. If the victim survives, they may start to suffer from a variety of after effects that can range from days to months. This includes an irregular heartbeat, fatigue, depression, and more.

With all the awareness surrounding heart disease and the impact it has on our population, only an estimated 54% of Americans say they know CPR. Even worse, less than 3% are actually certified. When performing CPR, injury may occur, such as broken ribs, which is common when examining the amount of force needed to jumpstart the heart. Although, if not performed correctly, it can result in further injury which could be avoided, such as organ damage. That’s why it’s crucial to learn CPR from an accredited business, such as Karl Environmental.
